I’m no expert on intelligence-gathering, but here are a couple of ways I’ve been using to identify the highest-volume traffic sources for geos I’m wanting to scale for. Hopefully this will draw more tips from those of you that are more-experienced in this area!

1)Alexa Top Sites

I’d just choose the geo and go over the top 50-100 sites by hand. There must be an easier way – perhaps by using a site like buildwith.com to identify the ad networks each site uses.

Anyway, I’d look through the sites for a)traffic sources themselves and b)sites with ads on them – and obviously find out which network the ads are from. Sometimes just by hovering your mouse over the ad you can figure out the ad network from the url.

Alternatively you can use a plugin like “Live HTTP Headers” (available for FF and Chrome) and click on the ad to see the redirects and figure out the ad network that way.

2)Similarweb Top Sites
