Success in Building a Team — But Can’t Figure Out Risk Adjusted Cashflow!!!

Turn back the clock to STM London, I remember a talk made by cmdeal, where he talked about how to build a successful company. I could not quite understand what he was talking about, but i knew he was probably right, so i took down some notes and looked at it every few months to see what i could make out of it. here is what i took down

Cm deal – focus on risk adjusted cash flow. New perspective.
1. If other people can do it so can you
2. You can’t do it alone.
3. The only metrics that matter is risk adjusted cash flow
4. Need new perspective
5. Need great people

over time, as we had more and more jobs, we had to hire. this was difficult for me because most of the time hires do not do a job as good as i can. but again i did not have enough time to do everything. this was when i started to accept point 2, you can’t do it alone. charles ngo also mentioned before that new hires do not have to do better than you, they just need to do the job well enough and they will learn over time and get better while i can focus my time on more important jobs. i was taught from young that i can do things alone and the best person for the job was myself, imagine how long it takes to shift that mindset.

the next point is about great people. as the company grows, there are more and more things that need to be taken care of simply because of the increased responsibilities of the company. even with many front-end and service staff, there are still many more high level decisions that required critical thought, creative thinking, understanding people etc. i have tried these jobs myself and failed at many of them. i actually failed at more jobs than i succeeded. it took me a very very long time to accept that i need someone else to do them. someone that can do the job better than i did and enjoyed it more. th ...
